Media Enlightenment & Enlightened Media: Digital Literacy in the AI Age
In a world flooded with information, the ability to distinguish facts from manipulation and disinformation is key. The Media Literacy course is designed to give teachers, students, parents and civic activists the practical knowledge and skills needed for critical thinking, recognizing fake news and using the media responsibly. Participants will learn to analyze different media formats, ask the right questions and discover hidden messages in the content they encounter daily.
This course is not about the theory - it is an interactive journey through the world of media, social networks and the digital environment. With the help of practical tasks, case studies and simulations, participants will master techniques for safe and effective communication in the digital world, becoming more informed and more confident citizens, able to make informed decisions based on data and evidence. Whether you are a teacher who wants to impart these skills to your students or a parent who wants to protect your child from misinformation, this course is for you.
METHODOLOGY
The course methodology is designed to offer an interactive and practically oriented approach to media literacy. Our main goal is to combine the theoretical framework with active forms of learning - role-playing games, simulations and working with various digital tools. This methodology is based on proven scientific principles and research in the field of media theory and critical thinking, drawing inspiration from the works of Jürgen Habermas (with a focus on communicative rationality), Roland Barthes (semiotics and media analysis), W. James Potter (understanding media messages) and other authorities in this field. It is known that there are over 40 different definitions of media literacy, but the course focuses on the following key elements: Media literacy – participants will learn the basics of traditional and new media, acquiring skills for creating, distributing and analyzing content. Developing critical thinking and fact-checking skills – special emphasis will be placed on identifying disinformation, fake news and manipulative messages through role-playing games and simulations. Participation and inclusion through media – we stimulate active civic participation by encouraging the creation of content that contributes to the public debate. Empowering vulnerable groups through media – through practical tasks and case studies, strategies for using the media as a means of empowering marginalized communities will be examined. Creativity and empathy – through different forms of media creativity, skills for empathy and social engagement will be developed.
The course relies on active forms of learning to facilitate the acquisition of key skills and knowledge: Role-playing and simulations – participants will be placed in various real or hypothetical situations in which they will have to analyze media content, make decisions and defend their position. These activities encourage critical thinking, teamwork and problem solving. Working with different software – the course will include digital tools for content creation (videos, podcasts, infographics) and for fact-checking. Participants will learn to use platforms for information analysis and dissemination of media materials. Discussions and debates – moderated debates on key media issues will be held, which will develop skills for argumentation, defending a civic position and defending an opinion. Practical cases – working on real examples from the media will allow participants to apply what they have learned in specific situations. Creative projects – participants will work on individual and team projects, creating their own media products – articles, videos or campaigns for social change.
The training modules are organized thematically and include three distinct stages in the spirit of the process philosophy of education. The course is organized in blocks of 90-minute sessions (usually two or three per day), which include a presentation of the challenges, a brief theoretical framework, individual and group tasks to share experience and inspiration, presentations, discussions and feedback on what has been learned.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
After completing the course, participants will be able to:
- Use different media platforms confidently and responsibly.
- Recognize manipulative and misleading messages, as well as check facts.
- Create media content that is informative, ethical and socially relevant.
